Blog Journal #3
The technology standard I feel I would be most comfortable teaching with the help of pre-existing knowledge, would be “Knowing and using various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.” I’ve learned how to do this since elementary school and have been able to improve on it through the years. The technology you would use for this (if I were to be teaching 2nd grade) would be online scavenger hunts for different text features, identification of text features on simple kid-friendly websites, and grade-level appropriate online textbooks. A technology standard I would have trouble teaching and would need more practice on is “Using information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot”. The reason for this is because the technology you would have to use for it are online storybook readers and creators such as StoryJumper, online poster creators, and online comic strip creators, which I don’t have any experience working with.
One of the tools in the CPALMS I found most interesting and would be most helpful to me, is the planner. “My Planner” is a tool that makes organizing your lessons and schedule a lot easier and fun. If you’re teaching a specific subject, the took also recommends teaching resources that will help you. It provides three main components: Class, CMAP, and C-Schedule. I am all about planning and being organized, it helps keep my head clear and prevents me from falling behind. I would use this in my classroom to make lesson plans and keep assignments in. I would also use the standards they recommend to help me improve my teaching.
A new skill I acquired from the Newsletter Design was column breaking. This skill is helpful for when I want to keep my Newsletters clean and aesthetically pleasing. What I didn't like about this were the problems I found with wrapping my texts. I didn't like the fact that I had to keep everything wrapped in line with the text. I had to learn how to treat the images like they were apart of the text and I found that frustrating at times, until I finally figured out how to perfect it. Since I played with the wrapping text skill so much this time, in the future, it will be a lot easier to work with. What I learned from this assignment can be used when I become a teacher, I will need to make these kinds of newsletters for my students and their parents. It’s good that I’m getting accustomed to it now at least.
